Overview
Umbilical Hernia Repair is a procedure to fix a common condition in babies in which part of the intestine bulges through the abdominal wall near the belly button. The procedure includes a 2-3 cm cut at the base of the belly button to put the lump back into the tummy and the skin in the right place. As many umbilical hernias at birth tend to heal on their own over time, the doctors usually recommend that you wait a few years before considering the surgery for a newborn. The procedure results are permanent and recurrent hernias are rare but not impossible. There’s a slight chance of the hernia returning months or years after the surgery.
